1X, 2X or 3X chainring set?

If you are not a veteran rider with more than 2 years of road bike riding experience, please don’t rashly choose the 1by sprocket system. That is, do not choose the crankset with only one chainring disc. Road bikes are usually equipped with two or three chainring discs, and for most novices, unless you insist that only a 3X crankset system can provide the gear ratio you need, the 2by crankset system could already meet the daily cycling needs of most riders.

Most 2by sprocket systems offer a sufficient range of gear ratio options to meet the needs of most riders in most circumstances. By choosing the appropriate front small chainring and freewheel, you can use the lower gear ratio for climbing while also getting a higher final speed with a higher gear ratio. This gear ratio range is often sufficient to cope with various terrain and cycling conditions. The 3X chainring system adds an additional front small chainring, which increases the complexity of the gear system. More discs mean more variable options and increased maintenance and adjustment complexity. The simplified 2X system provides a sufficient choice of gear ratio while also being easier to maintain. The 3X chainring system is generally heavier than the 2X system under equivalent conditions and may produce some additional aerodynamic resistance. Reducing unnecessary bike parts and system weight may be more attractive for riders pursuing lightweight and increased speed. Although it may be beneficial in some cases to replace the 2X disc system with the 3X disc system, it is unnecessary.

What 2X chaining size do the professional drivers use in the race?

The most professional drivers selected the 2X chainring set of 56/42T. In mountain stages, 53/39T or 52/36T is more common.

What is the suggested 2X chainring size?

If you focus on flat road cycling, we recommend you use a 53/39T or 54/40T 2X chainring set. However, for most novice riders or those who do a bit of climbing, the recommended 2X chainring size is 50/34T, called the standard chainring set combination. But recently, more and more riders have believed that the 52/36T combination is a standard combination of comprehensive road conditions.

Front small chainring: In a 2X chainring system, the front small chainring is used in climbing sections, and the front large chainring is used in flat road cycling. SUMLON believes you should focus more on choosing the front large chainring. As for the front small chainring, if you don’t have much experience or think the crankset meets your requirements, you could choose 36T or keep the old option.

Front large chainring: Some riders may prefer a high cadence, so they will choose a smaller front large chainring to make riding easier at high speeds. Others may prefer larger front chainrings to obtain higher speeds at lower cadences. Please choose the right front large chainring according to your own cycling habits. But exceptional circumstances always exist; you may need a different size front large chainring according to the specific game needs. For example, some races may require your road bike to be able to reach higher final speeds, while others may require your bike to have more extraordinary climbing ability.

Material and structure design

The front sprockets are usually made of aluminium, steel, or carbon fibre. They have unique advantages in their weight, durability, and performance. The aluminium front sprockets balance their price, weight and durability, making them a first choice for many cyclists. The steel front sprockets are very durable but heavy, while the carbon fibre front sprockets are light and stiff, ideal for maximizing power transmission efficiency, but usually at a higher price.

Budget

Your budget will inevitably influence your decision to choose the front sprocket. While high-end carbon fiber front sprockets may offer superior performance and weight loss, they bring a higher price tag. In comparison, the more affordable aluminum or steel options provide excellent durability and performance at a cost. When weighing your options, consider your priorities and budget constraints, and choose the performance and value balance that best fits your needs.
